Re-create Timecode for VFX Shots during Digital Intermediate

Let's assume you are in the middle of a digital intermediate workflow. Freshly rendered DPX sequences with visual effect (VFX) shots just came in from the effects facility.

Unfortunately these shots don't have source SMPTE timecode embedded in the DPX header and thus your onlining tool can't assemble these shots into the timeline to where they belong. At least the filenames are the same as for the original scans.

Recreate the SMPTE timecode from file names:
  1. Open the sequence in Pomfort DPXHeaderEditor.
  2. Click on the edit icon besides the "DPX SMPTE Timecode" field and the Timecode Edit Panel will open.
  3. Choose an appropriate frames-per-second setting.
  4. Click "Adjust to Filenames" and the timecode will be set according to the numbers in the filenames.
  5. Click "Done".
  6. Click "Apply..." in the Sequence Window and "OK" in the Apply Panel and your changes will be applied.

Repair header information in sequence where single files have been replaced

Let's assume you have a DPX sequence that got retouched and several files have been replaced. Unfortunately these files now don't have the same header information as the original sequence any more. You don't know exactly which and how many frames have to be repaired, but the first frame seems to have correct header information.

Repair header information for the entire sequence:
  1. Open the sequence in Pomfort DPXHeaderEditor.
  2. Click on the edit icon next to the field you want to be repaired.
  3. Check the "Force overwrite" checkbox.
  4. Click "Done".
  5. Do so for every field that should be repaired.
  6. Click "Apply..." in the Sequence Window and "OK" in the Apply Panel and the information from the first frame will be updated to the entire sequence.

Add additional Metadata Fields in DFR Syntax

Let's assume you handle tons of footage from a digital field recorder (DFR) such as from S.Two or Codex in a digital film project. Your IT guy built a nice little metadata script that grabs shot and scene names, camera information, and other metadata from the DPX headers in the special DFR syntax.*

Unfortunately the editors added footage that has not been recorded with a digital field recorder, which now drops out of your metadata scripts.

Add DFR metadata fields to DPX headers:
  1. Open the sequence in Pomfort DPXHeaderEditor.
  2. Click on the edit icon besides the "DPX Creator", "DPX Projectname" or "DPX InputDevice" field and an Edit Panel will open.
  3. Choose "Paste DFR Template String" from the Edit Menu, the textfield now contains a template for the special DFR syntax.
  4. Edit the template as needed, for example enter shot and scene name.
  5. Click "Done".
  6. Click "Apply..." in the Sequence Window and "OK" in the Apply Panel and your changes will be applied.

* Digital field recorders from Codex and S.Two split existing metadata fields of the DPX header into several fields of different meaning by special characters.
