High color depth with Pomfort SilverStack HCD

Pomfort SilverStack HCD is a enhanced variant of the production-proof Pomfort SilverStack that now supports color depth higher than 8 bit for the creation of QuickTime™ movies from 10 bit DPX or 16 bit TIFF images and supports high color depth codecs such as "ProRes HQ", "Uncompressed 4:2:2 10bit", "SheerVideo", "Cineform HD", codecs from AJA and Blackmagic or other 10bit YUV and RGB codecs for QuickTime. Pomfort SilverStack is available as a separate license.

Production Value

With Pomfort SilverStack HCD you can be sure, that your high quality source material - either scanned from film, captured with a clip recorder or shot with a digital movie camera - can be transferred from image sequences (e.g. as DPX or Cineon files) to QuickTime's production codecs. Work natively with 10bit material for example in Final Cut Pro without the need of a separate "Online" of your image sequences.

Full-Range Video Workflow

SilverStack HCD 1.4 also contains basic support for full-range video support for certain 10bit Y'CbCr (YUV) codecs. If it's needed in your workflow, you can get "illegal" code values (super-black and super-white) from RGB image sequences into a QuickTime movie (for example ProRes is such a supported codec) to leverage the full range of code values (0..1023) in such Y'CbCr codecs.

Pomfort SilverStack HCD features are already included in every Pomfort SilverStack version 1.4 or higher.

Pomfort SilverStack HCD - FAQ

Q: How do I get 10bit QuickTimes with Pomfort SilverStack HCD 1.4?

A: As high bit depth processing costs addition render time, and not all codecs profit from that, SilverStack now offers a "high color depth" (HCD) pipeline, that can be enabled by choosing "Use High Color Depth Pipeline" in the Movie Settings.

Q: Do you support ProRes in 10 bit?

A: Yes, we do. Rendering ProRes-movies with SilverStack from 10bit DPX files results in 10bit-video in Final Cut Pro. Unfortunately there are hardly software-based color pickers available to prove that (for example Shake opens all ProRes videos in 8 bit mode only), but we tested it with video analysis tools at the SDI signal of an AJA video card playing out test ramps of our ProRes movies.

Q: What factors have impact on render performance?

A: In no particular order: Processing power in terms of processors and cores (such as "8core is better that MacMini"), disk I/O capabilities (for source images input as for QuickTime output), GPU graphics power (as we do all pixel manipulations on the graphics card).

Q: Do I need lots of RAM?

A: No, SilverStack and it's render queue Cinemator are made to run on (relatively) low memory footprint.

Q: Can I upgrade my Pomfort SilverStack license?

A: Yes, we offer an upgrade option for licensed users of SilverStack < 1.4 and a new option for licensing SilverStack 1.4 including the high color depth (HCD) edition in the Pomfort online store.

Q: How can I create 16:9 DV movies?

A: Choose the appropriate "Pixel Aspect Ratio" in the movie settings (such as "DV-NTSC 16:9" or "601/DV-PAL 16:9") and check the 16:9 flag in the Codec Options.

Q: Why do my DV movies look so crappy in QuickTime Player?

A: QuickTime Player opens DV QuickTime movies in low visual quality by default, even they are in perfect DV quality. To enable the normal, high quality display, check "High quality" in the "Visual Settings" tab of the video track in the Movie Properties window (QuickTime Player Pro only).
