Creating and managing looks in Silverstack SET

The ARRI Alexa digital film camera allows users to customize the color filtering of video clips with "Alexa Looks".

With Alexa Looks camera users can influence the color processing chain of the Alexa camera and apply creative looks for on-set preview in the camera without baking that into the recorded clips.

With the Looks Add-On for Silverstack SET you can interactively create these looks based on existing Log-C material.

Providing all color controls for Alexa Looks as specified by ARRI

Alexa Looks allow to manipulate Printer Lights parameters (applied in Log-C gamma space), a Tone-Map Curve (1D LUT transforming from Log-C to video space), Saturation, and Lift, Gamma, Gain parameters (applied in video/Rec.709 gamma space).

In the Looks Add-On these parameters can be manipulated in an intuitive and easy to learn user interface embedded right into Silverstack SET.

The looks created with the Looks Add-On can then be transferred to the Alexa camera to be used for previewing in the camera.

Previewing Log-C material with looks in Silverstack SET

With the Looks Add-On Silverstack SET can automatically display clips coming from the Alexa camera with the right look applied.

When recording Log.C files, the Alexa camera saves which look has been set in the camera for recording. The Look Add-On reads these look parameters stored as metadata in the clip files and uses them for the correct color processing.

Thus Silverstack SET displays clips exactly as they have been previewed in the camera with looks applied.

These looks can be stored in a grade bin, further refined for each clip and exported as Alexa Look files (XML).

Transfer clips and looks to Final Cut

Silverstack SET has a broad range of options for transferring clips and their metadata to other post production software. For Final Cut Pro 7 and Final Cut Pro X, the Look Add-On adds look information to the Final Cut Pro XML files. This information is used by the included FxPlugins to display Log-C clips in Final Cut with the right look applied.

The Looks Add-On includes two licenses for the Alexa Look2Video FxPlugin. Give one two your editing room for proper displaying Log-C clips in editorial without transcoding.
