Spotlight Plugin for RED raw files (.r3d)

The RED RAW (.r3d) file format offers valuable production metadata such as various timecode information (TOD TC and Edgecode), production metadata (e.g. clip, reel or camera) as well as tons of recording metadata such as exposure, Kelvin or tint.

This information can be read with the REDline command line tool and we built a Spotlight plugin around that, that lets you easily find and identify r3d-files on your computer. R3D files are not supported by Spotlight on Mac OS X natively, but the Pomfort R3D Spotlight Plugin fills this gap and provides the metadata from REDline to the Spotlight search index.

Currently REDline has to be installed on your computer, it can be downloaded for free from red.com (it's in the RED Alert package).

The information provided by the Pomfort R3D Spotlight Plugin includes the following attributes:

  • ReelID
  • Camera
  • Reel
  • Clip
  • FrameWidth
  • FrameHeight
  • FPS
  • Total Frames
  • TOD TC Start
  • Edgecode Start
  • TOD TC End
  • Edgecode End
  • Kelvin
  • Tint
  • Exposure
  • Saturation
  • Contrast
  • Brightness

The following examples illustrates, what can be done with this plugin:

Example: To find R3D raw files that have been shot at a given shooting date and have a certain reel name:

  • Press "Command-F" in Finder,
  • choose Shooting Date from the list of criteria and enter the date,
  • add a new criteria, select Reel and enter the reel number.
  • Spotlight finds the right .r3d file using the metadata gathered by the Pomfort R3D Spotlight Plugin.

The Plugin is available as a free download.

Special thanks to Andreas Wacker, who brought up the idea for such a plugin!
