Part 1: Data integrity with checksums and hashes
One of the most important goals of data management on set is to maintain the…
MediaVerify is the verification software of choice for post-production and streaming facilities, digital labs, DITs, and data wranglers. By implementing ASC MHL, it advances Pomfort’s previous verification tool SealVerify.
MediaVerify simplifies media data verification while maintaining maximum data security by using ASC MHL.
MediaVerify has everything you need on hand: Verification reports, table-based outlines and a detailed overview of the data management history.
Let everybody have peace of mind: MediaVerify proves that your data is safe and sound.
It is an elemental part of modern film workflows to copy files multiple times and distribute data across different facilities and departments. Ensuring that all files are available and consistent throughout the entire digital production pipeline is key. On-set data management defines which files are part of the production scope. In post-production it is necessary to ensure that those files are received exactly as intended. This is where MediaVerify comes into play.
Check the consistency of the managed data by creating hashes of all files and comparing them against hashes stored in the ASC MHL history. Since all standard hash formats are supported, you can use your favorite checksum method. The automated completeness scan is based on the ASC MHL diff command and identifies missing and new files even before verification, saving valuable time. Comprehensive verification outlines allow you to track potential issues to the core so you know what's going on.
MediaVerify provides a detailed overview of all histories in a well-structured list and displays all generations for each file. Information on hash formats, date, time, and data management activities is directly visible in the user interface. The creator info enables collaborative data management: It allows you to view and share contact information within the ASC MHL history to request missing files or additional information. Text-based reports and log files help you document your work and share verification results with others. Besides the newly created ASC MHL generation, they are an extra proof of verification and support you to maintain a professional workflow.
The ASC MHL specification was developed by the Motion Imaging Technology Council (MITC) at the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) to standardize data management and store information about data handling within additional metadata files. ASC MHL is a further development of classic MHL (Media Hash List) but is not backward-compatible with it. ASC MHL enables a consistent data procedure and helps to ensure the completeness and consistency of media data throughout the entire film pipeline from set to post-production.
Technically speaking, there are two essential aspects: ASC MHL manifests and chain files. The manifests record the hashes of the managed files which then can be used for comparison to ensure that data copies are consistent. In addition, the chain files track all manifests and save each data management operation. Any operation, e.g., copying files or folders, will result in a new generation of manifests. While the manifests guarantee consistency, the chain files ensure the completeness of your data. Together, they are a perfect match and form the ASC MHL history.

As industry standards evolve, we shift our development focus to MediaVerify and ASC MHL-based verification. However, SealVerify remains available as a free download for Mac and Windows. SealVerify uses checksums stored in classic MHL files to ensure data consistency and is not compatible with ASC MHL.
